An ounce of prevention…

I’ve have had a few people pop up on my caseload lately that are coming into PREVENT issues related to pregnancy, childbirth, surgery, and sport performance. I get so excited when people reach out to not only fix a problem, but to prevent an issue before it starts!

Here are some ways to prevent the problems before they start!

Tips for Preventing…

Surgical scar adhesions

  • Prevention: early and gentle scar mobilization, movement, cupping, scar tape, and pelvic PT

  • Why? Scars that are left to heal without any professional guidance or mobilization can stick to tissues around and under the scar. For example- I have worked with many Cesarean section scars that are more than 5 years old that contribute to current symptoms of bladder urgency and pelvic pain. This is because the bladder sets right behind the scar.

Constipation

  • Prevention: Nutrition, some supplements, water, the right exercises, abdominal mobility

  • Why? Well first of all, its uncomfortable… We all know the feeling. But as it pertains to pelvic health, we want to void pushing on the toilet. Pushing puts a lot of unnecessary pressure down on the pelvic floor. It also can be painful to have a  bowel movement if the stool is harder or drier. This can cause issues later on!

A long labor

  • Prevention: Stay active during pregnancy, movement during labor, a good birth team

  • Why? Labor does not have to take 2 days, yall! Every contraction should bring you closer to your baby being Earth side. Long labors and deliveries correlate to increased chance for pelvic floor dysfunction post partum. Moms-to-be who do pelvic PT during pregnancy typically have a shorter labor and less risk for adverse outcomes!

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is - of course - a KEY part in preventing these things, and many others. I have worked with many people prior to a hysterectomy, prostatectomy, and many other types of surgeries. Pelvic PT is a essential part of prevention and I would be honored to be on your prevention team!
